not surprisinglu, tourism has therefore proved difficult to define. in some senses ,this is a reflection of the complexitu of tourism, but it is also indicative of its immaturity as a field of study.it is difficult to find an underpinning coherence of approach in defining tourism, instead, definitions have been created to cater for particular needs and situations. yet, it is vital to attempta definition of tourism not only to provide a sense of credibility and ownership for those involved , but also for the practical considerations of measurement and legislation. for the purpose of this book , we can think of tourism as the temporary movement to destinations outside the normal home and workplace ,the activit ies undertaken durjng the stay and the facilities created to cater for the needs of tourists (mathieson and wall ,1982,p,1 ) . while this is not a strict technical definition,it does convey the essential nature of tourism ,i.e ;
