Sean Patrick Flanery Seeks Treasure in Syfy's 'Mongolian Death Worms'

From the network that brought us "Mega Piranha" and "Dinoshark" comes a whole new oversized terror: "Mongolian Death Worms," airing on Syfy this Saturday. The man-eating creepy crawlies may not be able to fly like their piscine B-movie counterparts, but they're equally vicious and ready to devour anything that crosses their paths.
The storyline: Deep in the outer desert of Mongolia — which, based on this sneak peek below, looks an awful lot like Texas — a nest of these deadly mythical creatures is disturbed by an American oil company looking to tap into the area's natural resources. Newly awake, these segmented monsters begin to breed and spread, sucking up anything (and anyone) that gets in their way.
Like any good cheese flick, there's only one man who can stop the enemy: Sean Patrick Flanery ("Boondock Saints"), starring as a treasure hunter/adventure seeker on a mission to tap into the secrets of a legendary tomb — protected, it just so happens, by the death worms themselves. It's a role the star of "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" could get behind, and he swears he didn't take himself too seriously for the part, drawing on Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones for inspiration (though he's quick to point out that he's not Ford by any stretch of the imagination). "I really felt like we had to interject some humor," Flanery said on a press call Thursday. "The [movies] that I really liked were like 'Raiders of the Lost Ark,' where it was deadly serious, but he was funny as well. You could see that this guy really, really enjoyed what he did. You know, he just relished every moment of the day."
Although Wikipedia claims the legendary creatures are capable of emitting sulphuric acid and a paralyzing electric discharge, these B-movie beasts rely on green screens and special effects, including an arm-like extension that comes from their throats to grab and swallow their prey with a deadly roar. And the best way to kill one off? Send it up in flames, naturally. Good thing these critters move slowly!
